Bill Humphrey began designing websites in a 2002 technology education class and has provided web design and programming services to small nonprofits, publishers, religious institutions, political campaigns, and private individuals ever since. Whether you need a full rebuild including brand design and a needs assessment, a smaller cosmetic update and some new graphics, or just some help transitioning your existing site to a drag-and-drop template service with a built-in intuitive content management system, Bill can help.
He recently completed two web design courses on the latest best practices (including for mobile design), and a UX/UI course, at the University of Massachusetts Lowell as part of a 10-course graphic design certificate program.
Bill is also a professional writer and editor, with 20 years of experience in the blogosphere and as a senior editor at an online magazine. If you need assistance or advice on building out your core, static content and messaging for your website, including for political campaigns, Bill is able to guide you through that process.
Bill Humphrey designed and coded a fully mobile-responsive non-profit website for the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, a 501c3. This design showcases extensive web design and HTML/CSS experience applied to developing websites for small non-profit organizations with unique content and digital archive needs. Bill designed and coded the overhaul of the website in close, step-by-step coordination with the organization's board president.
This site's navigation system was specially designed to achieve a combination of long-term ease-of-maintenance objectives desired by the client: 1) the navigation should remain updatable without needing to update individual pages; 2) any changes to the navigation should not affect each page's date-of-update timestamp so that readers know exactly how old the content is on any given page, but each page does not fall out of sync with navigation changes; 3) minimize coding or programming outside of HTML and CSS so that the non-profit organization's leaders can maintain and add to the site easily themselves. There were plenty of options for the first two points using pure scripting, but the third requirement incentivized some creative design and programming thinking to implement with the use of HTML and CSS alone.
Automatic resizing, an overlay navigation menu, and grid re-arrangements ensure the site flows seamlessly on smartphones and tablets of a wide range of sizes, while maintaining visual design and ease of tapping without a mouse to get anywhere on the site you need to go:
This client is not only trying to attract new members and activity participants via smartphone, but also to retain existing members who might even still prefer to print out the webpages to read them or share them with friends, especially to promote upcoming events. The site features a print-ready responsive version that strips out most of the styling, images, and buttons (rendering full URLs where appropriate) to allow for a very straightforward printout of the important written content on each page:
